Steve Smith marked his return in the Big Bash League (BBL) in style with a fiery hundred in the BBL 2024-25 fixture between Sydney Sixers and Perth Scorchers at Sydney Cricket Ground. Joining the Sixers’ squad after the recently ended Border-Gavaskar Trophy down under, Smith turned up to his T20 mode and went on to smash a fiery 121*(64) runs as Sydney Sixers defeated Perth Scorchers by 14 runs in a high-scoring encounter at SCG. Batting first, Sydney Sixers posted 220/3 in their 20 overs, while Perth Scorchers could only reach 206 runs losing seven wickets.
Coming to bat after losing the toss, Sydney Sixers lost two wickets for 49 runs in 7.3 overs. After that, Steve Smith and skipper Moises Henriques took charge of the innings as the duo put up a partnership of 113 runs for the third wicket. Henriques got out after scoring 46(28) runs hitting six fours and two sixes. On the other hand, Smith remained on 121*(64) smashing 10 fours and seven sixes. This was the third hundred of Smith’s BBL career. Apart from that, Ben Dwarshuis also gave finishing touches with 23*(7) runs as Sixers reached the 220-run mark.
Ashton Turner leads with fighting 66* as Perth Scorchers fell short of Sydney Sixers’ total
Chasing the winning target, Perth Scorchers were looking to get a flying start before Finn Allen (15 off 7) got out at the score of 36 runs in 3.2 overs. After that Aaron Hardie also went for a golden duck as Sean Abbott scalped two in two. After that, Sam Fanning (41 off 29) and Cooper Connolly (33 off 23) added 55 runs for the sixth before the Scorchers again lost back-to-back wickets.
Coming to bat in the middle-order, captain Ashton Turner lead from the front with a knock of 66*(32) runs hitting six fours and two sixes. However, he couldn’t take his team down the line as Perth Scorchers fell short of 14 runs from Sydney Sixers’ score. For the Sixers, Sean Abbott took four scalps, while Ben Dwarshuis, Hayden Kerr, Moises Henriques scalped a wicket each.
