One of the most su ccessful teams in the Indian Premier League
(IPL), Mumbai Indians have tasted title victories for a record number of five
times in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. All the championship victories have
come under the able leadership of Rohit Sharma, who has managed to take good decisions
under pressure. Furthermore, he rose to a leadership position in the Indian
team on the basis of his IPL record as well.
However, Rohit is certainly in the last few years of his cricketing career. In the last two editions, MI has not delivered on the expected lines and failed to reach the playoffs. It will be a critical 2023. Wherein Rohit will surely be judged on his team selections and decisions to secure favourable results. Otherwise, there can be few players, who could be in the scheme of things for the MI owners.
Here are two players, who can lead Mumbai Indians after
Rohit Sharma:
1. Jasprit Bumrah
Making his IPL debut in 2013, Jasprit Bumrah cemented his position as a lead pacer for MI in a couple of seasons. Bumrah’s wicket-taking abilities with his pace and variations have played a key role to help the Mumbai-based franchise to secure success on most occasions. He scalped 20, 19 and 27 wickets respectively in 2017, 2019 and 2020 editions respectively, resulting in the team’s title victories.
Bumrah was chosen as the deputy to Rohit Sharma in the Test
series against South Africa in early 2022. Currently, the bowling attack of MI
is revolved around Bumrah, and has proved to be a key differentiator in the team’s
performances. With him at the helm, the team is poised to do well in terms of an
attacking mindset, which has been witnessed over the years.
