Real Madrid’s centre-back Antonio Rudiger has undergone a knee surgery on April 29, 2025 and is reported to be out of action for almost two months. The German defender was supposedly playing in pain for quite a few months before finally taking this decision to get an operation done. Rudiger had recently come under heightened scrutiny for his actions during the Copa Del Rey final against FC Barcelona and was expected to receive a considerable ban for his actions. However, this surgery will anyway keep him off the football field for quite some time.

This comes as a very big blow to Real Madrid as most of their first-choice defenders are out due to injury. Rudiger’s surgery adds him to an already long list of Eder Militao, Dani Carvajal and Ferland Mendy, all of whom are already sidelined since quite a long time. Rudiger’s absence will have surely dealt a big blow to the team in this crunch period where they will be fighting for the league title; which remains to be the only trophy for which Real Madrid are still in contention. They are currently in second place behind table-toppers Barcelona who have a four-point lead.

I’m finally pain-free again: Rudiger shares update about surgery

Rudiger took to his social handles and expressed his gratitude towards the medical team after his surgery. He is hoping to play soon for club and country as there are some major tournaments like the FIFA Club World Cup and Nations League which are set to start soon. In an official X post, he said, “After I have played more than seven month with severe pain, it was unfortunately unavoidable that I had to undergo a meniscus surgery. Now I'm finally pain-free again, and the surgery was a success.”

Talking about his return to action, Rudiger said that he was eager to come back as soon as he can but also needs to approach his recovery with care and will therefore monitor his weekly progress to decide a return date. He said, “I will do everything I can to make it happen. See you soon and take care of yourselves.”
