Amidst the ongoing action of IPL 2025, Indian captain Rohit Sharma made a shocking announcement as he confirmed his retirement from the Test format ahead of India’s upcoming tour to England. The 38-year-old shared a story on his Instagram where he made the announcement of his Test retirement.

“Hello everyone I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format,” Rohit Sharma wrote on his Insta story.

Rohit Sharma Test career

Rohit Sharma will now continue to play ODIs for India after retiring from the T20Is and Tests. He retired from T20Is after leading India to the T20 World Cup win last year and also went on win the 2025 Champions Trophy in his captaincy. However, he didn’t have great records as a Test captain last year as India got whitewashed in a home Test series against New Zealand and failed to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after 10 years.

Talking about his Test records as a batter, Rohit Sharma announced his arrival in Test cricket in style after scoring 177 runs in his debut Test against Australia in 2013. After batting in the middle-order in the initial years of his career, Rohit was promoted as an opener in Tests in 2019. He became full-time Test captain of India after former skipper Virat Kohli stepped down from the role in 2022. Under his captaincy, India reached the final of the World Test Championship in 2023 but ended up losing against Australia. He has scored 4301 runs from 67 Test matches in his career at an average of 40.57 along with 12 hundreds and 18 fifties. Now, as India are scheduled to tour England for five-match Test series in June, the Indian team management will look for a new face as Test captain.
