On the sidelines of IPL 2025, Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir finally broke the silence on the future of two of the senior most players of the Indian team, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The 43-year-old said that as long as both the players are performing, no one can tell them to stop playing for the Indian team. India is set to tour England for five-match Test series, starting on June 20 and Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set to return in the longest format, with Rohit returning as captain.
“Till the time they are performing, they should be a part of the team. Performance ensures selection. No coach, selector, or even the BCCI can tell someone to stop playing if they’re delivering,” Gautam Gambhir said at ABP India at 2047 Summit.
“No sportsman plays for farewell. The biggest farewell and trophy is the love of the country. That is what truly matters,” he further said.
It’s not coach’s job to pick the team: Gautam Gambhir
Speaking further, Gautam Gambhir also reflected on his role as head coach of the Indian team. He stated that it’s isn’t his job to pick the team but to prepare the team that has been selected. Gambhir was last seen in action when India won the 2025 Champions Trophy in February. He is now set to assist the Indian team on the upcoming tour to England.
“It's not the coach’s job to pick the team; that’s for the selectors. My responsibility is to prepare whoever is selected to perform for India,” Gambhir said. “I want to be a winner. Nobody wants to lose. I don’t want to change anything in that,” he further added.
