The Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has been amid a lot of criticism. The 37-year-old has not been able to show his best performance as he is struggling to get runs on the board off late. After a poor run of form in the New Zealand Test series, he continued his dismal run in the ongoing five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25.
After coming down to bat at No. 6, Rohit Sharma scored 3 off 23 balls and 6 off 15 balls in the second Test in Adelaide. In the third Test, which although ended in a draw, Rohit Sharma scored 10 off 27 balls in the only innings he played. But in the Boxing Day Test, where he came out to open, demoting KL Rahul to No. 3, the 37-year could not make much of the opportunity as he was dismissed at the score of 3 off 5 deliveries.
Rohit Sharma likely to retire after BGT 2024-25
Since his cheap dismissal at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Friday, December 27, he has been amid a lot of criticism. After this, a report by new agency PTI has stated that the national selection committee Chairman Ajit Agarkar is also in Melbourne and might get into talks with the Indian skipper to navigate the transition phase, hinting at Rohit Sharma’s retirement from the longest format of the game.
Moreover, the PTI report also stated that Rohit Sharma can play good ODIs, if Test responsibility is taken off his shoulders. Moreover, these reports come after former Indian cricketers including Sunil Gavaskar and Krishnamachari Srikanth also questioned Rohit Sharma’s form in Test cricket.
It is to be noted that Rohit Sharma has had a horror series with the bat so far, making just 22 runs in four innings at an average of 5.50. The 37-year-old has had a nightmare run with the bat since India’s Test summer started against Bangladesh in September. He has scored 156 runs in 14 innings at an average of 11.07.
