On Sunday, May 11, Manchester United lost to West Ham United in their latest Premier League match at Old Trafford, which was their record 17th defeat of the season. After going down with a 2-0 scoreline, Ruben Amorim, the Manchester United manager, categorically stated if their poor form in the Premier League continues in the next season, then he might have to leave the team, giving way to a new manager in the process.
Notably, in the ongoing 2024-25 season, Manchester United have failed to win two consecutive matches in the Premier League, and they are currently on a seven match winless streak, their worst in league history. Since January 26, Ruben Amorim’s side has won only against the relegated teams Ipswich Town and Leicester City in the Premier League, showcasing the extent of their poor run in recent months.
Manchester United are currently in 16th place in the Premier League table
In the aftermath of losing to West Ham United at home, Ruben Amorim was quoted as saying, as per BBC Sport, “We are losing the feeling that we are a massive club and it's the end of the world to lose a game at home. If we are not scared of losing a game as Manchester United and don't have that fear anymore, it is the most dangerous thing a big club can have.”
The Portuguese also talked about how the current run is decisive in the history of Manchester United, and they will have to turn it around next season. He remarked, “It's a decisive moment in the history of the club. We need to be really strong in the summer and to be brave because we will not have a next season like this. If we start like this, if the feeling is still here, we should give the space to different people.”
Manchester United are currently in 16th place in the Premier League table with 39 points to their name, two spots ahead of the relegated teams, while their UEFA Europa League final opponent Tottenham Hotspur are a spot behind them.
