Former Argentina forward Sergio Aguero is widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers of his generation, having scored 184 goals in 275 Premier League appearances for Manchester City. Aguero retired from football in 2023 after being diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia, which cut short his stint at Barcelona. Recently, Aguero was asked to name his top three strikers of all time on his Twitch channel and the former City star did not hesitate to reveal his choices, but he left out some big names that might surprise many fans.
Aguero did not include Portuguese legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who is widely considered one of the best players ever and the leading goalscorer in men's international football. The former Real Madrid superstar has scored over 800 goals in his competitive career.
Aguero also snubbed legendary Pele, who is regarded as the greatest player of all time by many pundits and fans. The Brazilian icon scored over 1,000 goals in his career and won three World Cups with his national team. The forward also played for Santos and New York Cosmos, where he won several domestic titles and continental trophies.
Instead, Aguero picked three former Barcelona players as his top three strikers ever. He ranked them as follows:
3. Luis Suarez: The Uruguayan hitman scored 195 goals in 283 games for Barcelona, forming a lethal partnership with Lionel Messi and Neymar. The ‘El Pistelero’ also won four La Liga titles, four Copa del Rey trophies, and a Champions League title with the Catalan club. Suarez also had a prolific spell at Liverpool, where he scored 82 goals in 133 games for the English side.
2. Thierry Henry: The French legend scored 228 goals in 376 Premier League games for Arsenal, where he won two league titles and three FA Cups. Henry moved to Barcelona in 2007, where he won two more league titles, a Copa del Rey trophy, and a Champions League title also winning the World Cup and the European Championship with France.
1. Ronaldo Nazario: The Brazilian phenomenon is widely regarded as one of the most talented and complete strikers ever. ‘El Phenomeno’ scored 47 goals in 49 games for Barcelona in his only season at the club, before moving to Inter Milan and Real Madrid, where he won several domestic and continental trophies.
Aguero's list is certainly debatable, but it reflects his admiration for these three strikers who have left their mark on the game. It must be noted that Aguero might not have purposely left out Pele and Ronaldo as both did not play in the traditional ‘center-forward’ position, Ronaldo alternated from a midfielder to a winger and then turned into a striker in the latter stages of their career. Pele played as a second striker and as a centre-forward and there is not much exact data available from that time.
