Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh cricketer, was at the centre of another major controversy, this time in the Global T20 Canada 2024. As the captain of the Bangla Tigers Mississauga, he refused to play a super over against the Toronto Nationals to determine the winner of the Eliminator, resulting in his team getting eliminated from the tournament.

For the unversed, the Eliminator of the GLT20 Canada between the Bangla Tigers Mississauga and the Toronto Nationals got washed out due to the wet outfield. With that, Shakib Hasan-led were certain to make the next round of the tournament due to their higher position in the league standings in comparison to the Toronto Nationals, apart from winning against them in the league stage.

But then, the match referee decided to conduct a super over to find the winner between the Bangla Tigers Mississauga and the Toronto Nationals despite the outfield being wet. After arguing the case of his team, Shakib Al Hasan didn’t arrive for the toss for the super over, which led to the GLT20 Canada releasing a statement to announce that the Nationals have made it to the Qualifier 2 at the expense of the Mississauga.

As per the rules, in case of an interruption in a T20 game, “at least 5 overs are needed to be played for a result. In no circumstances, except a tied game, 1 over can be played to decide the result of a game.” However, this rule wasn’t followed to conduct the GLT20 Canada 2024 Eliminator match result between the Bangla Tigers Mississauga and the Toronto Nationals.

Moreover, in Qualifier 2, the Toronto Nationals defeated the Brampton Wolves to make the final of the Global T20 Canada 2024, where they will take on the Montreal Tigers.
