Match nine of Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 saw Smriti Mandhana-led Royal Challengers Bangalore Women take on Mumbai Indians Women at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Both the teams entered this fixture on the back of a loss in the respective previous matches, but it was the MI Women who came out on top, courtesy Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr’s brilliant efforts.
But what caught the eyeballs in this fixture was Shreyanka Patil’s brilliant save near the boundary ropes. On the final ball of the powerplay, MI’s Hayley Matthews struck a slow half-volley towards long-on. However, it seemed to be going for a six, young all-rounder flung herself and caught the ball and released it before crossing the line. While MI batters added only two runs instead of six, video of Patil’s acrobatic fielding effort has since then gone viral.
Speaking for the RCB - Women, this was the only joyous moment in the match as the MI Women batters just steamrolled the opposition to win the match by seven wickets. While the Smriti Mandhana-led RCB Women will next take on UP Warriorz on March 4 at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, the MI Women will take on Delhi Capitals Women on March 5 in what is the first fixture of WPL 2024 at Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
