India’s singles tennis player crashed out of the 2025 French Open qualifiers, registering a 2-6 4-6 loss against Austria’s Jurij Rodinov in the second round, held in Paris on May 21. After hammering United States’ (US) Mitchell Krueger in the opening round, Nagal, the 170th-ranked player, got stunned by the 225th ranked Rodinov. The match lasted for one hour 29 minutes at the Roland Garros. The first set witnessed Nagal trailing by 2-4. However, in the next set, the 27-year-old made a comeback in the second game and he utilised the opportunity by getting the break back.
However, in the next game, he saw himself under pressure again after losing the initial two points which led him to 0-30 scores. He again bounced back with 4-4 figures but in the 10th game, he lost his service which led to his defeat in the match. Sumit Nagal, who participated in all four Grand Slams in 2024, won’t feature in the main draw of the 2025 French Open. In the previous edition of the French Grand Slam, he lost in the main draw after losing to Karen Khachanov in the opening round.
Sumit Nagal underwhelming form leads him to another unsuccess
Before the French Open 2025, Nagal registered defeats in 2025 BNP Paribas Primrose Bordeaux, 2025 Prague Open, and 2025 Monza Open played across April and early May. After facing the unprecedented decline in form, he will look to be disciplined with his game play to make a comeback in the remaining tournaments of the season.
French Open 2025, which will be played from May 26 to June 8, won’t have any Indian players in the single’s category as hopes were relying on Nagal’s performance in the season. Yuki Bhambri, who was competing at the Geneva Open 2025 along with America’s Robert Galloway, also delivered disappointing news to Indian tennis supporters as he suffered an early elimination from the tournament on May 21.
