The Indian cricketing legend, Sunil Gavaskar, hopes for the captain Rohit Sharma to allow Ravichandran Ashwin to lead Team India out to the field to honour him for his 100th Test match milestone in Dharamshala. The 74-year-old stated that it would be a wonderful gesture towards Ravichandran Ashwin for doing great things for Indian cricket during his ongoing career.
The fourth Test of the five-match series between India and England is ongoing at the JSCA International Cricket Stadium, where Ravichandran Ashwin picked up his 35th five-wicket haul in the longest format. His exploits in the 99th Test have put the Indian cricket team in a commanding position on Day 3, needing only 152 runs to win the match and series against England.
During his interaction with Ravichandran Ashwin on JioCinema in the post-day show, Sunil Gavaskar was quoted as saying, as per Times of India, “India win tomorrow, and you go to Dharamshala (for fifth and final Test), I just hope that Rohit allows you (Ravichandran Ashwin) to lead the team out to the field. That'll be a wonderful gesture, honour for all that you have done for Indian cricket.”
In response to Sunil Gavaskar’s comments, Ravichandran Ashwin was happy to thank him while hoping to play for India as long as possible, and said, “Sunny bhai, you are being too generous, thanks so much. However, expectations about all these things, I think I am well past all that. But genuinely saying, I am enjoying every single moment I am being with this team. The longer it lasts, I will be happy.”
On Day 3 of the fourth Test against England, Ravichandran Ashwin also became the highest wicket-taker in Tests in India, surpassing Anil Kumble in the process. Ashwin has 351 Test wickets at home in 59 matches at an average of 21.40, while Kumble got 350 wickets in 63 home Tests at an average of 24.88 during his illustrious career.
