Veteran cricketer Ajinkya Rahane has expressed confidence to serve India in Tests again. The right-handed batter last played for India against the West Indies in a Test match played at Port of Spain in July 2023. Despite staying out of the team for more than one-and-a-half years, Rahane is hopeful of his comeback ignoring his age and relying on his vast experience. In the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2024-25, the 36-year-old has looked extraordinary with his batting and captaincy for Mumbai. Following his performance, selectors might consider him for Team India’s England tour for five Tests to be held from June to August.
Speaking to the Indian Express, Rahane said, “There is still fire and passion in me. I’m playing Ranji Trophy at the moment, trying to give my all to the Mumbai team. The goal is clear to make another comeback. I’m more experienced, but still feel young. I’m fit enough to compete at the highest level. I never get satisfied with my game and don’t take things for granted. I feel there’s more cricket left in me. As a batsman, one can play till 40. There are players who have played till the age of 39-40. What matters is fitness. We need more experienced players, plus a few youngsters, in the team. So that they can learn."
Rahane played vital role in Mumbai’s massive quarter-final win against Haryana
Rahane looked magnificent with his bat against Haryana in the crucial quarter-final game held at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. In the second innings of the match, he brought his first century in the ongoing edition and helped his side to clinch a 152-run triumph. The Mumbai skipper played a 108-run knock which helped him grab Team India fans’ attention.
Rahane was a part of India’s match against Australia in the World Test Championship (WTC) final 2023, played at the Oval. In India’s 209-run defeat, he looked decent with his bat, scoring 89 and 46 in the first and second innings respectively. However, his form slumped again during India’s Test series against the West Indies which led to his ouster from the side. Appearing in two games, he could score only 11 runs.
