Basketball fans from around the world are in for a treat as Netflix has announced the release date for the much-awaited ‘The Redeem Team’ documentary which delves deep into the story of the 2008 USA Basketball Olympics team that went on to win Gold in Beijing on the back of stars like the late Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwayne Wade etc. 


The documentary follows Team USA's journey from bronze medal finish in Athens 2004 to top spot on the podium in Beijing. The U.S. team is considered one of the best-ever assembled, featuring the legendary Kobe Bryant, Jason Kidd, Chris Bosh, and Chris Paul, in addition to Wade and Howard.


Three-time NBA Champion Dwayne Wade was present at the premiere of the documentary, where he talked about the importance of this Olympic Gold in his illustrious career. "Before you go play in the Olympics, you don't really understand how big that moment is," Wade told Olympics.com.  


"Standing up on that podium at the end, when they're playing our national anthem before they bring the gold medals out, you realise in that moment, that this is the world. You're the best in the world... It was special," he continued. 


'The Redeem Team' documentary will available to stream on 7 October 2022 and will exclusively air on Netflix. The streaming platform also posted a tweet about the documentary that said, The Redeem Team (led by Kobe Bryant, @KingJames, @DwyaneWade & @carmeloanthony) is the untold story of the 2008 US Men’s Olympic basketball team who had everything to lose — and everything to prove. The Redeem Team premieres October 7.”


This project was created by Olympic Channel along with the Kennedy/Marshall Company and Mandalay Sports Media, in association with 59th and Prairie Entertainment, UNINTERRUPTED, NBA Entertainment and USA Basketball. The documentary will be directed by Jon Weinbach. 


'The Redeem Team' documentary will also be the first collaborative project between the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and Netflix. Previously, the Olympic Channel produced the history-making Argentine squad that took gold in 2004 in 'The Golden Generation.'
