Former India opener Krishnamachari Srikkanth expressed his concerns over the selection of Tilak Varma in the Asia Cup 2023 squad. Tilak made his debut in the T20I series against West Indies, and soon after that, he was picked in the 17-member squad for the Asia Cup, announced by the BCCI. However, Kris Srikkanth, who is known for his blunt and honest remarks said that Varma shouldn’t be given a call in such a big tournament.

In his YouTube channel, Srikkanth said that the youngster should be groomed well, and play a few ODI games before putting him in the World Cup squad. The 1983 World Cup winner said, “Do not give Tilak Varma a debut in a big tournament, play him in the ODI series before that.”

He added, “Tilak has fantastic potential, a brilliant player — but he has to play a couple of one-day series before putting him in the WC squad. We need to groom him properly.” Notably, since his international debut, the Mumbai Indians player played seven T20Is where he scored 174 runs, including a half-century.

Speaking of the tournament, Asia Cup 2023 will be played in the ODI format, and the ACC event will commence on August 30. The season inaugural will be played between Pakistan and Nepal; whereas, India will begin their campaign on September 2 against Pakistan.
