Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday, February 4 announced the signing of French forward Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich on loan during the ongoing transfer window. According to reports, the club signed him for £45m on option after it had rejected the move three days earlier. Once this deal is on, the 19-year-old French forward will be with Spurs for a period of six years. Tel was earlier in talks with different clubs but had turned down the offers. Manchester United and Chelsea have expressed their interest in signing him, while Arsenal has also contacted him.
When the Bundesliga giants bought Tel from Rennes for about £23 million in 2022, the then Bayern Sporting Director Hasan Salihamidzic branded him as "one of the biggest talents in Europe". Tel, when played for the German club, scored 16 goals in 83 appearances. However, he found it hard to maintain his place in the club. This Premier League season, the 19-year-old has made two Bundesliga starts and six league replacement appearances. However, he failed to score a single goal in this entire season.
Tottenham Hotspur expect Mathys Tel to create magic with the ball
Now since Tel has signed the deal with Spurs, club fans can expect some magic from the forward on the ground. Tel is known for his tricking skills and had some moments earlier with defenders. He can produce magic with the ball on the ground, but he can also get out of position at the wrong time. If Tottenham decides to play him as a winger, he may be used primarily on the left flank, as he can drive into the middle of the pitch from that position. He also enjoys sprinting down the wing, although his ball at high speeds may not be sharp enough to avoid errors against full backs.
Jamie Redknapp, a former English footballer mentioned Tel as a talented player. He believes that Tel works hard during training and has a lot of potential. "Nineteen years of age and Tottenham obviously signed a lot of good young players in the last few years, which seems to be the profile of what they’re trying to get," Jamie said.
Tottenham is 14th in the Premier League and will be playing the League Cup semi-final second-leg against Liverpool on Thursday, with Spurs leading 1-0 after the first leg.
