James Maddison, the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, which is why he is expected to miss the majority of the upcoming 2025-26 season. It is understood that James Maddison will be undergoing surgery, and post that, he is going to get on the recovery and rehabilitation phase, forcing him to be out of action for months.

Notably, the ACL injury happened to James Maddison during the pre-season match against Newcastle United in South Korea last weekend before getting taken off the field. After Tottenham Hotspur drew the match, their new manager Thomas Frank confirmed that the injury to the midfielder happened on the same knee, which had ruled him out of their 1-0 win over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final towards the end of last season.

After making his return from Asia earlier this week, James Maddison underwent tests to find out the extent of his injury, and the subsequent reports confirmed the fears surrounding the knee ligament tear. With that, it is more than likely that he won’t be able to make anywhere close to 45 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur last season, in which he had scored 12 goals.

Following the departure of Son Heung-min to Los Angeles FC after a 10-year stay at the club, this is a second big player new manager Thomas Frank has lost for quite a long time within a span of days. James Maddison, who has played for England seven times, last in 2024, will now find it tough to make it to the national team for the FIFA Club World Cup 2026.
