In the final of the UEFA Nations League 2025, Portugal, who are the inaugural champions, will be taking on defending champions Spain at the Allianz Arena in Munich on Sunday, June 8. After the tournament was established in 2018, there have been three different champions of the UEFA Nations League, including France apart from Portugal and Spain, with the one of the latter two set to hold the coveted trophy for the second time.
Road to Munich 2025
Portugal stayed undefeated in League A Group 1 of the UEFA Nations League, defeating Poland twice while winning and drawing one game each against Scotland and Croatia. In the quarter-finals, Portugal were shocked by Denmark with a 1-0 scoreline away from home in the first leg before they defeated them 5-2 after extra-time in the second leg, to make the semi-finals, where Germany lost to them 2-1, and now they stand on the precipice of winning the title once again after six years.
Spain, who were in League A Group 4 of the UEFA Nations League, won five out of their six matches, defeating Denmark and Switzerland twice, while getting the better of Serbia once and drawing the other game against them. In the quarter-finals, Netherlands gave Spain more than a tough fight, staying level at 5-5 - including 2-2 result in first leg - on aggregate after extra-time in the second leg before losing to them on penalties, while the semi-finals for the Spaniards was a humdinger of a contest, defeating France 5-4.
Portugal vs Spain Head-To-Head
Over the years, Portugal and Spain have had a big rivalry in international football, facing each other 37 times in history so far. While the head-to-head record stands firmly in favour of Spain with 19 wins over Portugal, to just six of the latter, they haven’t been separated by more than a goal in over two decades.
Their last meeting happened between them at the UEFA Nations League three years ago, which Spain won 1-0 against Portugal.
