Wasim Jaffer has now made a very good name for him in the cricket fraternity as an analyst of the game. He is often seen getting involved on social media with funny memes. Apart from social media comments, Jaffer also likes to share his opinion on current cricketing events. He also has a YouTube channel where he talks about different cricket topics. Recently, Jaffer took to his YouTube channel to share his thoughts on Shikhar Dhawan and why he should be considered for the T20 World Cup later this year and the 2023 ODI World Cup. Jaffer also mentioned how Dhawan is often overlooked as a batsman.
Wasim Jaffer, while talking about Dhawan's prolific performance at the top of the order, said that India should not look past Dhawan as an opening batsman for the upcoming World Cups yet. He said that even though India has a lot of contenders for the opening slot alongside Rohit Sharma, Dhawan makes a good candidate for himself to partner with the former.
We should not underestimate Dhawan: Jaffer
“You cannot rule out Shikhar Dhawan for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The way he has performed in IPL in the past two years… even though we know Rohit Sharma is a surety to open, KL Rahul is a candidate, Virat Kohli said he wants to open, Prithvi Shaw is also coming up as a future contender, there are a lot of options. But Shikhar Dhawan should not be ruled out either in 50-over or T20 internationals,” said Jaffer on his channel.
Jaffer further added that Shikhar Dhawan has played a crucial role in India's success in white-ball cricket and thus, Team India should not underestimate Dhawan.
Shikhar Dhawan's form in the last two years
Shikhar Dhawan, who is currently leading the Indian team in Sri Lanka, has been amazingly consistent in the past two years. Dhawan, while playing for Delhi Capitals, was the second highest run getter in IPL 2020. He had scored 618 runs @44.14. He continued his brilliant run in the next edition as well and has scored 380 runs @54.29 in the first half of the tournament. Dhawan also completed 6000 ODI runs when he scored 86* off 95 against Sri Lanka in the first ODI. He took 140 innings, second fastest after Virat Kohli, to achieve this milestone. Also, he has now scored 10,000 international runs as an opener for India.
