The derby between West Brom and Wolves at the Hawthorns in the FA Cup was marred by continuous trouble from the fans of both teams before the visitors secured a 2-0 win. During the heated contest, a blood-soaked West Brom fan was helped off the ground by the medical staff, while the Wolves fans chanted “Let him die.”
During the first Black Country derby in 12 years between West Brom and Wolves the play was halted for 38 minutes at one stage due to disorderly behaviour from the crowd. The tension between both sets of fans at the Hawthorns was there before kick-off, but it spilt over shortly after Matheus Cunha scored the second goal for Wolves in the 78th minute, following the opener from Pedro Neto in the first half.
As per the report from the BBC, the visiting Wolves fans gained entry into the home end where the West Brom fans were sitting. Missiles were thrown by both sets of fans at each other which led to both teams leaving the field.
It led to the shocking scene of a West Brom fan getting escorted away from the home end by the medical staff while blood was streaming off his face. At the same time, the medical staff were trying to stem a wound on the top of his head, to ensure that his injury didn’t get more serious before providing him adequate treatment at the earliest.
The players of West Brom and Wolves returned to the field to play out the remaining 12 minutes of the contest after the respective managers Carlos and Gary O’Neil had a chat together with stadium officials and police representatives. At the end of the horrible day for football, Wolves did manage to book their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup at the expense of West Brom.
