In Chennai Super Kings' last home league game of the IPL 2023, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated CSK by six wickets and nine balls remaining on Sunday. The post-match scenes were a sight of surprise for the home fans, where the former India legend, Sunil Gavaskar took MS Dhoni’s autograph on his shirt. Gavaskar later revealed his last wishes before dying that included 1983 and 2011 World Cup-winning captains Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni.

After Sunday's game against KKR, the entire CSK squad took a lap of honour and thanked fans for their support throughout the tournament.  Speaking in a panel on Star Sports, Gavaskar  opened up on why he acted impulsively and became emotional when Dhoni signed his shirt and  said that since the match was Dhoni's last home league game, he wanted to make it special.

Gavaskar began by saying, "When I got to know about Chennai Super Kings and MS Dhoni are going to take a lap of honour at Chepauk, I decided to create a special memory. That’s why I ran towards MSD to take his autograph. It was his last home game at Chepauk."

He further added, "Of course, he will get a chance to play here if CSK qualifies for the playoffs. But I decided to make that moment special. I was fortunate enough that someone in the camera unit had a marker pen. So, I am thankful to that person as well."

While showing Dhoni's autographed shirt, Gavaskar got emotional and went on to reveal his wishes during his last moments. He  said, "Kapil Dev lifting the 1983 WC Trophy and MS Dhoni hitting that winning six in the 2011 WC final are the two cricketing moments I would love to see before I die."
