Yashtika Acharya, a junior National Games gold medallist in powerlifting, who was just 17-year-old, died in Bikaner district of Rajasthan state on Wednesday, February 19, following her attempt at lifting 270kg weight that went horribly wrong in practice at a gym a day prior. In a gruesome accident, the 270kg rod fell on during her attempt at a powerlift on Tuesday, February 18, according to the SHO Vikram Tiwari of Naya Shahar in Bikaner district.
Notably, in the immediate aftermath of the accident, Yashtika Acharya was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she was declared dead, as per the report from NDTV Sports. Vikram Tiwari told the media that the accident happened while the trainer of the teenager powerlifter was making her lift weights at the gym, and it also led to the trainer suffering minor injuries.
Family of Yashtika Acharya haven’t registered a case with the police
As per the SHO, the family of Yashtika Acharya haven’t registered a case with the police for the accident, which took their daughter’s life. The body of the 17-year-old was handed over to the members of her family after it underwent postmortem examination on Wednesday. Moreover, powerlifting is a sport of displaying strength wherein a player tries to lift maximum weight under three different categories, i.e., squat, bench press, and deadlift. While the sport is not part of the Olympic Games, it is still quite popular all over the world, and accidents involving the Indian teenager are rare, but they do happen from time to time.
