On Sunday, May 18, Jamie Vardy, the Leicester City striker, who is set to leave the club at the end of the season, scored the 200th goal in his 500th appearance for them against Southampton. The 38-year-old, who was playing in his final home match at the King Power Stadium for Leicester City, made it a memorable day with his milestone goal, which was vital in their 2-0 win, and following that, he received a fitting farewell from his family, former and current players, owners, and of course, the fans.
While Leicester City and Southampton are both headed for the Championship, the second division of English football, following their relegation from the Premier League, there was a lot at stake in their clash, especially for Jamie Vardy, who was playing for the last time at home for his beloved club. In the 28th minute, the English striker managed to get on the scoresheet for the 200th time in Leicester City colours after getting a through ball from Justin James inside the penalty area.
The goal from Jamie Vardy in his 500th appearance for Leicester City sent the home fans at the King Power Stadium into complete ecstasy. The former Premier League champions were not only able to keep the lead in a relatively comfortable manner, but they extended it in the 69th minute when Kasey McAteer put the ball into the back of the net, making it 2-0 on a hot afternoon in the East Midlands.
Jamie Vardy says Leicester City will be fine after his departure from the club
After the 2-0 win, Leicester City brought out all the stops to give a fitting farewell to Jamie Vardy, who is arguably one of their greatest players of all-time, on the back of winning the Premier League and the FA Cup, which were quite incredible considering he played a key role in bringing them up in the first place after a long time. When asked about the future of Leicester City in the aftermath of him leaving his beloved club, he stated that they will be fine.
He was quoted as saying, as per BBC Sport, “They'll be fine, they'll be fine.. We've got a good squad and we've got all the youngsters coming through as well. I'm glad I'm not them, because football is a killer mentally and I couldn't do it all again if I'm honest. But I've enjoyed every minute of it and I look forward to keeping an eye on the club I love.”
