In the fourth round of the French Open, Lois Boisson, the world number 361, who hails from France, stunned third seed American Jessica Pegula in a three-set match while coming from behind at the Court Philippe Chatrier in Paris. After losing the first set, the 22-year-old managed to win the match with a scoreline of 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, to reach the quarter-finals of the home Grand Slam, where she will be taking on sixth seed Mirra Andreeva of Russia.
The surge of Lois Boisson in the French Open began after she was given the main draw wildcard following her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear in the knee last year. After defeating Elise Mertens, Anhelina Kalinina, and Elsa Jacquemot, she got the tough challenge of facing the US Open runner-up in the fourth round of the French Open, dropping the first set rather tamely.
Lois Boisson was playing against top five player in world rankings for the first-time ever
But then, her comeback was exemplary in the next two sets against Jessica Pegula, 31, in just her debut appearance in the Grand Slam main draw, to punch her ticket to the quarter-finals of the tournament in front of her home fans. Lois Boisson saved four break points in the third set before serving out the match at 5-4, smashing a forehand winner to seal the much deserved victory at the French Open.
After helping their home hero through to the final eight of the tournament in Paris, they serenaded her with “Lois!” chants at the Court Philippe Chatrier. Moreover, this was also Lois Boisson’s first-ever match against an opponent in the top five on the world rankings, and the challenge isn’t expected to get any easier at the French Open with Mirra Andreeva waiting for her on the other side.
