John Cena, the 16-time WWE Champion, turned heel in arguably the most shocking moment in the history of the promotion during the closing stages of the Elimination Chamber PLE from Rogers Centre in Toronto. The Leader of Cenation brutally attacked the reigning WWE Champion Cody Rhodes after winning the men’s Elimination Chamber match, betraying his fans by selling his soul to The Rock, the Board of Director of TKO, who own the WWE.

In the build-up to the Elimination Chamber PLE, The Rock had given an ultimatum to Cody Rhodes about wanting his soul on SmackDown, and demanded his answer at the Rogers Centre in just eight days time. During the aforementioned event, John Cena, who was one of the six participants in the men’s Elimination Chamber match, won the whole thing after managing to pass out CM Punk, thanks to an unlikely assist from Seth Rollins.

Heel John Cena will challenge Cody Rhodes for WWE Championship at WrestleMania 42

With that, John Cena punched his ticket to the main event of WrestleMania 42 at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, where he will be taking on WWE Champion Cody Rhodes. But then, in a shocking turn of events, with Travis Scott present inside the ring, at the behest of The Rock, John Cena hit a low blow on Cody Rhodes before using the Rolex watch and the championship belt to bust him open, finally turning heel in the process for the first-time in his WWE career.

The Rock also put the blood of Cody Rhodes on his new weight belt named “Cody’s Soul” in a stark reminder to last year’s Road to WrestleMania when he had vowed to not let him finish his story, but it didn’t end up to be the case. As the Elimination Chamber PLE went off the air, John Cena could be seen putting his left boot on Cody Rhodes’ skull, fully immersing himself in his new heel persona.

There are tons of questions that remain unanswered as to what was the reason for John Cena to turn heel during the final year of his WWE career, which makes the current Road to WrestleMania as volatile as it can possibly be.
