FC Barcelona secured a solid 2-0 victory over local rivals Espanyol on May 15, at the RCDE stadium in Barcelona. The victory propelled them to their 28th La Liga title due to mathematical superiority as they now moved to 85 points, seven points above Real Madrid, with only two games remaining in the season. The victory was extremely nostalgic for some Barcelona supporters as they had confirmed their last season’s league title victory under Xavi Hernandez at the very same stadium against the very same opponents as well.

One of the best moments of the match came when Barcelona got their opening goal in the 53rd minute with a scrumptious strike from 17-year-old Lamine Yamal. Yamal received the ball on the right flank before flicking it over the Dani Olmo who made a run towards the box. Surrounded by Espanyol defenders, Olmo played it back to Yamal, who cut inside with his left foot and made a sharp burst, before releasing a stunning curler into the top-left corner, beyond the reach of outstretched Joan Garcia. A late goal from Fermin Lopez sealed the victory and the La Liga title for the Blaugrana.

Hansi Flick wins domestic treble in his first season in-charge at FC Barcelona

While all of the players in Barcelona’s team are equally responsible for this title victory, a special mention must be given to manager Hansi Flick, who has inspired a solid turn-around at the club. Taking over from Xavi Hernandez in June 2024, Flick created an absolute monster team with Barcelona academy talents and just two new signings of Dani Olmo and Wojciech Szczesny. Fast forward to now, Flick has his hands on the domestic treble, winning the Super Cup, Copa Del Rey, and La Liga title.

He narrowly missed out on the UEFA Champions League as well after an agonizing defeat to Inter Milan in the semi-finals. With this, Flick joins an illustrious list of FC Barcelona managers who have won the league title in their debut season with names like Pep Guardiola, Luis Enrique, and Tito Vilanova to name a few. After a highly successful season, Flick now has his sights on the next one already, hoping to achieve even more laurels.
