In one of the biggest games of the ongoing Laliga season, Real Madrid defeated Barcelona 2-1 in a thrilling contest at Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium. It was undoubtedly one of the most exciting games on a rainy evening in the capital of Spain. However, the contest ended in a rather controversial way which is how all the El Clasicos have ended over the years.

Real Madrid go top of Laliga

With a position at top of the table at stake, it were the hosts who thumped their authority in the first half, courtesy of two brilliant goals from Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos. While Barcelona did try to forge a comeback with a goal from Minguenza at the hour mark, they just couldn't find an equaliser as the match ended in favour of the Los Blancos. It was certainly a crucial win for Zinedine Zidane's side as they went to the top of the league table.

Gerard Pique frustrated with referee

While the Barcelona defender didn't play the match, he was clearly frustrated by the referee's decision-making. Notably, there was a close penalty call after a foul from Mendy on Brathwaite which did not go in Barca's favour. To add to it, the decision to have only four extra minutes when there were so many stoppages during the game was something that left Pique fuming.

Luka Modric trolls Pique

After securing the win, Real Madrid player Luka Modric ensured that he would take a sly dig at Gerard Pique. As the 34-year-old shook hands with the Croatian, Modric was quick to point out that Pique will now go and argue with the referee. The Madrid midfielder also reflected on the fact that four minutes of extra time was more than enough.

Notably, Pique was handed a yellow card for his argument with the referee after the final whistle. Putting this loss aside, the Catalans will now gear up for the Copa Del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao next week.
