During a pre-season friendly at the Stade Velodrome in Marseille on Saturday, August 9, former Manchester United winger Mason Greenwood, who was representing Olympique de Marseille, got involved in a physical altercation with Tyrone Mings of Aston Villa. While Mason Greenwood played a key role in helping Olympique de Marseille register a comfortable 3-1 win, the ugly scenes towards the end of the contest, in which he was at the forefront, overshadowed his performance.
The incident happened after Mason Greenwood made a rough tackle on Aston Villa’s Amadou Onana in front of the latter’s teammate Tyrone Mings, who picked up the ball before approaching them. Onana got in the face of Greenwood before the latter called him words and pushed him, which irritated Mings nearby, and then, he grabbed the collar of Marseille’ winger and started to pull him all over the place.
Moments later, the teammates of both the players arrived at the scene and managed to pull them apart before the situation got any more worse. Mason Greenwood had his jersey torn, but just prior to that, he scored a goal for Marseille, while setting up one of the two goals for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and for Aston Villa, their captain John McGinn got the solitary goal in the evening.

Notably, before joining Olympique de Marseille in the summer of 2024 from Manchester United, Mason Greenwood was sidelined by them due to a criminal investigation on him for alleged attempted rape. It played a key role in his departure from the club despite the prosecutors eventually closing the case, acquitting him of any wrongdoing.
At that time, the Red Devils made a statement that they mutually agreed to part ways after recognising the difficulties in regard to him restarting his career with them.
