India beat Sri Lanka in the first ODI of the three-match series by 67 runs to go 1-0 up. After posting a mammoth 373/7 in their designated 50 overs, India restricted Sri Lanka at 306/8. While Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli starred with the bat, Umran Malik and Mohammed Siraj did the job with the ball in hand. Malik bagged three wickets in his eight overs, meanwhile, Siraj scalped two wickets.

Mohammed Shami also took one wicket at a crucial juncture in the game. The veteran pacer dismissed Dhanajaya de Silva when the batter was taking the Indian bowlers to the cleaners. Shami also made headlines for one of his actions during the match. The right-arm pacer almost ran out Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka while he was ba c king up way too far at the non-striker’s end.

The incident took place in the last over of the Sri Lanka innings. As Shami was getting ready to deliver the fourth ball of the over, he noticed Shanaka backing up. The bowler whipped off the bails immediately and the on-field umpire referred the decision to the third umpire. However, India captain Rohit Sharma immediately intervened and withdrew the appeal. Sharma was also seen getting involved in a light argument with Shami.

Meanwhile, after the game, Rohit Sharma revealed why he withdrew the run-out appeal in the final over. The Indian skipper said that Shanaka was batting on 98 and he didn't want to get the Sri Lankan skipper out in that manner.

"He's batting on 98 and the way he batted was brilliant. Cannot get him out like that and wanted to get him out the way we wanted to get him out. Hats off to him", Rohit said after the game.
