Hobart Hurricanes skipper Nathan Ellis pulled off a sensational catch to put an end to Matthew Short’s innings in the Big Bash League. On Friday, December 27, the Hurricanes were up against Adelaide Strikers at the Adelaide Oval. The game saw the Hurricanes securing an eleven-run win over their rivals. Earlier in the game, Ellis took an outstanding catch to send back his Strikers’ counterpart back to the pavilion, right after the opening batter scored his half century.
The game saw the Hobarts posting a total of 214 for five wickets after being asked to bat first. Ben McDermott came up with a knock of 68 runs off 34 balls. In return, the Strikers got off to a favourable start as opener Matthew Short came up with a quick fifty, by smashing three boundaries and four towering maximums. It seemed that the Strikers had almost won the game, but then a Nathan Ellis’ superb catch changed the course of the match.

During the game, Hurricanes bowler Waqar Salamkheil delivered a tossed up ball as Short stepped down but ended up misjudging the slog. The ball took a top-edge as Ellis, positioned at mid-off, ran back from the inside circle, and threw himself back to grasp the ball and thumped on to the ground. He showed great composure under pressure to regain control of the ball after it bounced on his chest to complete a catch.
The Strikers needed 91 runs off 50 balls when Short was dismissed. Tim David also came up with a quick 33 off 14 balls as the team reached a commanding position again in the game. After Short’s dismissal, the rest of the side couldn’t keep up with the target and the Hurricanes won the game with the margin of 11 runs.
