India’s javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra added a new record to his profile at the Doha Diamond League 2025 on May 16, breaching the 90-metre mark for the first-time in his illustrious career. With this feat, he has become the 25th man to reach the milestone. The two-time Olympic medal-winning athlete was striving to throw 90 metres for a long time. In several instances, he had spoken about aiming to throw beyond 90 metres. Chopra came close to achieving his dream in the Stockholm Diamond League 2022 but fell few centimetres short. In 2024, he was on the verge of recording the feat twice but couldn’t do it on both instances. On Friday, he pulled off the target and became the centre of attraction once again.
After breaching the mark, Neeraj Chopra didn’t celebrate his new achievement. Instead, he wore a smile on his face and shook his head with a calm and composed attitude. Following the throw, Neeraj spoke to RevSportz and he dedicated his latest achievement to people of the nation. He said, “A lot of people kept asking whether I’d ever throw 90 metres - because I hadn’t done it despite competing at the top level since 2018. I’d hit 88, 89... but never 90. Finally, not just for me, but for all Indians, the weight has lifted. And I feel like I can go even further.”
PM Narendra Modi congratulates Neeraj Chopra on registering the extraordinary record
Chopra’s effort was appreciated by India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who hailed the 27-year-old with a social media post. Taking to X, he wrote, “A spectacular feat! Congratulations to Neeraj Chopra for breaching the 90 m mark at Doha Diamond League 2025 and achieving his personal best throw. This is the outcome of his relentless dedication, discipline and passion. India is elated and proud."
However, Chopra’s magnificent performance couldn’t gain him the top spot as Germany’s Julian Weber surpassed him with a huge throw of 91.06M, which helped the 30-year-old to emerge victorious.
