One of the most unusual scenes took place during the Pakistan ODI Tri series fixture between South Africa and New Zealand at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Monday, February 10. As the Proteas were short of a player on the field, their fielding coach Wandile Gwavu came to take on the field as a substitute fielder himself. The incident took place during the 37th over of New Zealand’s innings.
As the Kiwis were chasing a target of 305 runs, South Africa fell short of one fielder. Notably, despite having four players to come as the 12th man, South Africa’s fielding coach was sent to the field as a substitute fielder against New Zealand. The similar kind of incident took place an year ago when South African batting JP Duminy came as a substitute fielder in a match against Ireland in 2024.
