
On Monday, August 4, the Indian cricket team etched history as they culminated the five-match Test series in a 2-2 draw. Coming into the final day with England needing 35 runs and India needing four wickets, the Indian bowlers held their nerves and completed a close six-run win to end the series in a stalemate.
The neck-and-neck battle which saw both sides hold their nerves until the final moment, Mohammed Siraj stood up on the occasion to guide the side to victory with six runs in hand. With the final wicket, where Siraj cleaned up Gus Atkinson, the celebrations not only began on the field, but also in the commentary box, dressing room as well as in the Indian subcontinent.
Sunil Gavaskar sings “Mere desh ki dharti” with Pujara and others; video goes viral
Although, Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir’s raw emotions took the internet by storm, which the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also shared on their social media handles, former Indian cricketer and legend Sunil Gavaskar was also seen in jubilation. In the videos going viral, Gavaskar was joined by Cheteshwar Pujara and Vivek Razdan as they were seen singing “mere desh ki dharti”, celebrating the moment.

Notably, Gavaskar got into celebration while in the commentary box, adding a delightful personal touch to the historic moment. As the camera panned inside the commentary box, the Indian legend was seen pointing to his white jacket, the one he wore during India’s historic win a the Gabba in 2021. “Lucky jacket”, he exclaimed as his face lit up in joy on Monday.
It is to be noted that Gavaskar had earlier hinted on donning the special jacket as after day three of the fifth Test, he told Shubman Gill, “Tomorrow I am going to wear my lucky jacket which I wore in Australia, the white jacket for the Gabba Test. I have got it only for that. All the best.”
