Sporting CP secured their 21st league title with a 2-0 win over Vitoria SC on May 17, at the Estadio Jose Alvalade. After going toe-to-toe with rivals Benfica, Sporting finally secured their second consecutive title on the last match-day of the season, courtesy of second-half goals from Pedro Goncalves and Viktor Gyokeres. Gyokeres, who has been in red-hot form this season, struck again on the final and decisive match-day, to seal the league title for his team.

Receiving a dinked pass into the penalty box during the 83rd minute, Gyokeres held off one defender with his strong physicality and beat another one with some elegant ball control under pressure. He moved towards goal before going around the out-charging Vitoria goalie and calmly slotted the ball to the back of the net. Sporting CP and Benfica were engaged in heated title race as both the teams were level on 79 points before the last match-day. A win by Sporting propelled them to 82 points, whereas Benfica drew their last game 1-1 against Braga, dropping two crucial points and losing out on the title.

We never know what happens: Gyokeres on his future club amid transfer speculations

Gyokeres’ goal at this decisive juncture is a testament to his fabulous form at Sporting CP. Having joined the club in July 2023 from Swansea City, the Swedish striker has turned into a goal-scoring machine, racking up 96 goals and 28 assists in 101 games for Sporting. In the current season as well, Gyokeres has scored 53 goals in 51 games so far. He still has a chance to win more laurels with Sporting before the end of the season as his team is set to face Benfica in the Portuguese domestic cup final on May 25.

His heroics in Portugal has seen him become one of the hottest prospects of the upcoming summer transfer window, with multiple clubs looking to sign the lethal striker. Arsenal has been said to lead the race for Gyokeres’ signature, however no official statements have been made by both clubs and Gyokeres himself.
