The Group B fixture between Iran and Wales was resulting in a stalemate draw until Iran missed three straight chances to score. Irani forward Sardar Azmoun broke free through the Welsh defence around the 50-minute mark. Here the Bayer Leverkusen frontman took an incredible shot but hit the woodwork.

The ball then ricocheted to midfielder Ali Gholizadeh, who took a scintillating curler which once again hit the other post. The ball was still in action as Azmoun once again found an opportunity to score but his header was blocked away by Welsh keeper Wayne Hennessey.

But after these missed opportunities, the Iranian team fought back and managed to double their lead with goals in the 98th and 101st minute.  Rouzbeh Cheshmi broke the deadlock and then  Ramin Rezaeian doubled the lead to seal a famous victory.

After the match, Wales talisman Gareth Bale expressed his disappointment with the defeat. He talked about the team gave their everything but couldn't recover after conceding the goals. “It's gutting," he said. "We are gutted, there is no other way to say it. We fought until the last second, it's one of those things that's difficult to take but we have to recover and we have to try and go again.

Bale then stated that they will push even harder against England and enjoy their football over the next few days. He said,  “We are all gutted but we have to pick ourselves up straight away. It is going to be difficult for us, we have one game left, we have to try and look at every positive and still try to enjoy the occasion as well."
