Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, January 19 celebrated its 50th anniversary in a grand event. The event starred former cricketers along with the active players, including the likes of legends Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Ajinkya Rahane and Rohit Sharma. During the same event, the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 was also at glance.
Team India’s ODI and Test captain Rohit Sharma, who was also in attendance, made his presence felt as he opened up on the zeal to bring back the silverware back at the Wankhede Stadium. It is to be noted that this comes after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) organised a fan parade at the Wankhede Stadium after the Men in Blue lifted the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados.
We will try out best to win the Champions Trophy 2025: Rohit Sharma
Speaking at the grand event at the Wankhede Stadium, Rohit Sharma expressed, “We will try our best (to win the Champions Trophy). I’m sure that the wishes of 140 crore Indians will be behind us when we land in Dubai for the Champions Trophy. We will try to do well and bring the Champions Trophy 2025 to the Wankhede Stadium (once we win).”
It is to be noted that India has two ICC Champions Trophy titles to their name. In 2022, India under the captaincy of Sourav Ganguly shared the title with Sri Lanka. However, 11 years later, MS Dhoni-led Team India lifted the title in 2013 with Shikhar Dhawan winning the Golden Bat, whereas ravindra Jadeja won the Golden Ball. Thereafter in 2017, India entered as defending champions, but lost to Pakistan in the summit clash.
In the 2025 edition, India have been placed in Group A alongside Bangladesh, hosts Pakistan and New Zealand. While they will kickstart their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai, they will then play arch-rivals Pakistan on February 23, followed by a match against New Zealand on March 2.
