Uruguay thrash Bolivia to move closer to Copa America quarter-finals

Uruguay took down Bolivia 5-0 in their Group C clash in New Jersey to secure their berth in the Copa America quarterfinals. Darwin Nunez scored for the seventh consecutive match for his country as Marceloa Biesla’s side made it two win from two. Facundo Pellistri opened the scoring with a header in the eighth minute before Nunez doubled the lead by clipping in a 10th goal in his last seven matches for the side. Manager Biesla said, "There are still several important steps to take in order to be convinced that Uruguay can reach the level we imagine with the individual talent it has. It would be incorrect to make conclusions."


NADA suspends javelin thrower DP Manu for testing positive during Indian Grand Prix

Indian javelin thrower DP Manu, who was India's one of the medal hopes at Olympics 2024, has been suspended by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) after being tested for an anabolic steroid. As per a source, the athlete’s test came positive during the Indian Grand Prix in April 2024. Manu is a 2023 Asian Championships 2023 silver medalist who was set to qualify for the Olympics through the world ranking quota, but will now miss the quadrennial tournament. 


Wimbledon 2024 draw: Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray set to return after injuries

On Friday, June 28, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray were placed in the Wimbledon 2024 draw despite getting operation on their respective injuries earlier this month. Serbian tennis icon Novak Djokovic proclaimed himself ‘pain free’ after he defeated Daniil Medvedev in an exhibition match on Friday, June 28, ahead of Wimbledon. The former world number one underwent surgery earlier this month after a knee injury at the French Open 2024. However, he took his place in the draw for Wimbledon, which is starting on Monday. After the match, he said, "I can tell you that pain-free tennis is the best tennis. I was pain-free and I'm really glad. It was a great test obviously against one of the best players in the world.” 

Emma Raducanu gets tough start at Wimbledon; Jack Draper likely to face Cameron Norrie

Emma Raducanu got a tough first round match at Wimbledon in the women’s main draw on Friday, June 28. She was scheduled to clash against 22 seed Ekaterina Alexandrova, who has four WTA singles titles. On the other hand, British men’s number 1 Jack Draper will square off against Elias Ymer and could be up against Cameron Norrie in the second round. Norrie will be up against Facundo Diaz Acosta in his first round match. Draper defeated Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s last week.

Red Bull star Max Verstappen defeated Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris at the Austrian Grand Prix on Saturday, June 29. Norris challenged Vertsappen hard in the early laps before losing his second spot to Piastri as he challenged the Red Bull for the lead on lap five. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took seventh from 10th on the grid after a technical fault. After the race, he said, "Once we cleared the DRS, I could do my own race and it was better. You could see they had two cars pushing flat-out trying to make it difficult for me.”


Priyanshu Rajawat, Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand storm into US Open quarters

India’s emerging badminton star Priyanshu Rajawat secures a spot in the men’s singles quarterfinals in the US Open 300 tournament. Eighth seeded Rajawat took down Chinese Taipei’s Huang Yu Kai in straight games with a score of 21-18, 21-16. In the next round, he will be up against Lei Lan Xi of China. Not only this, but the Indian women’s duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also made it to the next round of women’s doubles. They overcame Chinese Taipei’s Hsieh Pei Shan and Hung En-Tzu by 16-21, 21-11, 21-19.
