Why are players wearing black armbands in SRH vs RR IPL 2023 match?

After some exciting matches, Sunday (April 2) kick started with Sunrisers Hyderabad locking horns with Rajasthan Royals in the first match of the doubleheader at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad. After Hyderabad won the toss and elected to bowl first, the players and umpires observed minutes of silence to honour Salim Durani.


The players in the match between SRH and RR are also sporting black armbands to pay tribute to the former Indian cricketer, who passed away on Sunday (April 2) in Gujarat.  The 88-year-old was reportedly suffering from illness from a brief period.

The Indian all-rounder played 29 Tests, and scored 1202 runs, while taking 75 scalps. His key performance came against England in India’s series win in 1961-61, where he picked 10 wickets in Kolkata and Chennai.

The Indian cricket fraternity also took to social media to condole the death of the famous Indian cricketer. While Ravi Shastri addressed him as “one of the most colorful cricketers in India”, Jay Shah, the Indian Prime Minister also shared their tributes.
