After a controversial transfer saga, Viktor Gyokeres, the Swedish striker, finally managed to sign with Arsenal on a five-year contract from Sporting Lisbon in a deal worth £55.5 million plus a further £8.7 million in bonuses. The 27-year-old had made his intentions known in regards to leaving Sporting Lisbon after the completion of 2024-25 season, and the situation got ugly when he wasn’t able to secure a move away due to disagreements with the club.

Notably, Viktor Gyokeres claimed to have a gentleman’s agreement to exit the club with their President Frederico Varandas, which he wanted them to abide by, but the latter publicly stated that such a thing didn’t exist. With that, the Swedish footballer went on a strike, missing out on pre-season training with Sporting Lisbon earlier this month in his attempt to allow him to sign with Arsenal.

Viktor Gyokeres missed 13 days of pre-season training; getting fined £306,000 by Sporting Lisbon

As per the report published in Record, Viktor Gyokeres missed 13 days of pre-season training, and instead, he posted a picture of himself on holiday in Mallorca during that time, which made the President of Sporting Lisbon seethe. It led to Frederico Varnadas fine him a full month’s salary as punishment, which the striker accepted in his bid to leave the club before paying £306,000 as fine.

At the same time, there will not be much of a financial impact of the fine on Viktor Gyokeres since he got permission to collect the bonuses owed to him for his performance with Sporting Lisbon last season. Apart from collecting a payment for winning the Liga Portugal title, he also got paid £437,000 for more than 50 goal-scoring contributions for the Portuguese club.

In the new chapter of his footballing career, Viktor Gyokeres will wear the iconic No. 14 shirt, which previously belonged to legend Thierry Henry at the North London club.
