Inter Miami CF and Charlotte FC, two of the newest teams in Major League Soccer (MLS), were supposed to face each other in a regular-season match on Sunday, Aug. 20 at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. However, the game has been postponed to a later date due to both teams' progress in the Leagues Cup 2023, an international tournament between MLS and Liga MX clubs.
Inter Miami have unexpectedly qualified for the quarterfinals of the Leagues Cup courtesy of heroics from Leo Messi, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets. Messi has scored seven goals and assisted one in just four games, and Alba has made an instant impact with two assists in his second game.
Inter Miami beat Dallas on penalties after the game ended 4-4 courtesy of another amazing freekick from Messi, while Charlotte FC edged out Houston Dynamo 2-1. The two teams will now face each other in the quarterfinals on Friday, August 12 at DRV PNK Stadium.
As a result of their progress in the Leagues Cup, it is certain that one of the two teams will be playing on August 19 in either the final or the third-place match. Therefore, MLS decided to postpone their regular-season match on August 20 to avoid a scheduling conflict and to ensure fair play.
The new date for the MLS game between Inter Miami and Charlotte FC has not been announced yet, but it is expected to be rescheduled later this year. Tickets originally purchased for the August 20 match will be honored for the new date. Although Miami are doing well in the Leagues Cup, they are still languishing last in the MLS, and Messi and the squad will have a task on their hands to improve the situation.
