FC Barcelona defender Andreas Christensen has suffered yet another injury blow ruling him out till the end of the next international break; as confirmed by coach Hansi Flick. Flick confirmed the news while he was speaking to the media ahead of Barcelona’s next match against Real Sociedad, which is scheduled on March 2 in La Liga. Christensen who has been out for most of this season, has only played for 26 minutes under Hansi Flick, after being named merely thrice in the squad and playing just one game by coming in as a substitute.

Andreas Christensen was signed by the Spanish outfit in the summer of 2022. He started as a main-stay center back, pairing up with Ronald Araujo in the heart of the defence while manager Xavi Hernandez was in charge. Over the course of Xavi’s tenure, Christensen moved down the pecking order with arrival of experienced center-back Inigo Martinez and rise of home-grown talent Pau Cubarsi. Later on, Xavi Hernandez also experimented by playing the Dane in the defensive midfield position due to his acute passing range and physical prowess.

He was an option for us tomorrow but…: Flick speaks about injured Andreas Christensen

During Xavi’s tenure, Christensen played a total of 53 matches across both the seasons, with him being an integral part of Barcelona’s back-line during the 2023-24 season. After Hansi Flick took over the management at Barcelona, Christensen picked up an achilles tendon injury in August 2024 which kept him on the sidelines for almost five months. Even after his recovery by January 2025, he was on the bench for two of Barcelona’s fixtures.

He picked up another muscle problem in the month of February and is now expected to be out till almost the end of March until the international break gets over. Flick spoke about Christensen in his recent pre-match interview saying, “He was an option for us for tomorrow but again he was injured and we have to wait”, referring to Barca’s upcoming game against Real Sociedad.
