On Wednesday, May 7, Team India skipper Rohit Sharma put down curtains to his Test cricket career, announcing retirement in a sudden move. While his decision came in the eevening just minutes ahead of IPL 2025 fixture between Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings, it was quite surprising for several seeing a poor run of form with his bat coming in the past few months.
While Rohit Sharma’s decision came seeing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) prepping for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, along with the next World Test Championship cycle, which will run till June 2027. Moreover, several even speculated that the 38-year-old was under immense pressure, however, the BCCI Vice President has refuted these reports.
Sanjay Manjrekar rips into Rohit Sharma following latter’s Test retirement
Days after Rohit’s call, former India cricketer-turned-commentator, Sanjay Manjrekar has also opened up on it, hitting out at the former India Test skipper. Manjrekar, who has been vocal of his opinions, didn’t mince words as he highlighted Rohit Sharma’s poor form in the last 15 innings while taking a jibe at the Indian batter’s fitness.
Taking to X, Manjrekar wrote, "164 in his last 15 innings. Out of which 10 were at home v Bangladesh & NZ. Average 10.9. With his current fitness levels…Rohit Sharma’s days as Test opener were over. So…"
The 38-year-old took to his Instagram story to confirm his retirement, while adding that he will continue to play ODIs, stating, “Hello everyone I would just like to share that I am retiring from Test cricket. It's been an absolute honour to represent my country in whites. Thank you for all the love and support over the years. I will continue to represent India in the ODI format.” He calls off time in the longest format, scoring 4301 runs from 67 Test matches in his career at an average of 40.57 along with 12 hundreds and 18 fifties.
