India made a gradual step towards securing the top spot in the ICC World Test championship table after beating Australia by 6 wickets in the 2nd Test Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Delhi on Sunday. India’s points percentage climbed from 61.66 to 64.06 with their tenth win in 16 matches in the 2021-23 WTC cycle. Meanwhile, table-topper Australia saw its lead diminishing from 70.83 PCT to 66.66. It was once again Indian off-spinners who did most of the talking as R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja left Aussie batters completely clueless in both innings.
The Ashwin-Jadeja duo bagged 16 wickets in the 2nd Test match. While batting first, Pat Cummins-led side posted a good 263-run on board.
In response, Team India was restricted to 262 as Nathan Lyon bagged a five-wicket haul. In the 2nd innings of batting, Australia started off well on the back of Marnus Labuschagne (35) and Travis Head (43) but Day 3 of the Test brought the best of Indian spinners. Such was the quality of Indian spinners that except for Labuschagne and Travis Head, none of the Aussie batters could reach a double-digit mark.
In reply, India chased down the target in the 2nd session to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The hosts are now one win away from qualifying for the WTC final for the second time on the trot. A 3-1 series win against Australia would just be enough for India to finish with a PCT of 61.92 and qualify for the final alongside the Aussies. Let’s take a look at the updated points table of the World Test Championships 2021-23 cycle after the 2nd Test between India and Australia.
