On October 9, 1999, West Indies legend Brian Lara guided the side to a convincing 109-run win against Bangladesh. Lara, who was also the West Indies captain, won the toss and elected to bat first. With opener Sherwin Campbell, Lara gave a perfect start to the side as both stitched a 98-run stand off just 63 balls. After Campbell’s dismissal, Ricardo Campbell accompanied him at the crease and built a 63-run partnership off just 31 balls for the second wicket. Powell fell against Khaled Mashud after amassing 21 runs off 16 balls.
Brian Lara went on to notch up his 13th ODI ton and it was the first against Bangladesh. He brought his hundred in 45 balls and it is still the fastest 50-over century by a West Indies cricketer. He concluded his innings after hammering 117 runs off 62 balls. The southpaw’s knock included 22 boundaries (18 fours and four sixes). Lara’s knock also emboldened Shivnarine Chaderpaul, who scored an unbeaten 77 off 87. West Indies eventually delivered a target of 315 runs for the hosts.

Sherwin Campell stepped up with the ball and wrecked Bangladesh’s batting attack
Defending the total, Bangladesh witnessed a steady stand between Shahriar Hossain and Javed Omar. Nixon McLean stepped up and got rid of Omar, who could score only 18 off 41. Habibul Bashar also got dismissed on a one-ball duck. Mercy Dillon took Bashar’s scalp.

Campbell got Hossain stumped at the latter’s score of 47 off 70 and following his fall, the Bengal side kept on losing wickets in regular intervals and got bundled out on 205 in 49.1 overs. Except for skipper Aminul Islam, no batter looked disciplined. Campell grabbed 4/30 figures in his 10-over spell and emerged as the most successful bowler in the match. Captain Lara also got two wickets. In the Windies side's comfortable triumph, Lara became the Player of the Match (POTM).
