Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, the Mexican boxer, who is a former world champion, has been detained in his native country after being deported from the US due to alleged cartel connections. Notably, it was in early July when the 39-year-old was arrested by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers of the US in Studio City, Los Angeles just days after he had a boxing match with “The Problem Child” Jack Paul in Anaheim.
The Mexican prosecutors are alleging that Julio Cesar Chavez Jr was acting as a henchman for the Sinaloa cartel, which got declared as a foreign terrorist organisation by the US earlier this year. In her latest news conference, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum said that the boxer had been deported from the US before his arrest at a checkpoint in Nogales on Tuesday, August 19, prior to getting transferred to a federal institution in Hermosillo in the northern state of Sonora.

Over there, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr has been detained in a prison on Tuesday, as per the national arrest registry of Mexico, and now, he is awaiting charges in the case. Moreover, Claudia Sheinbaum had earlier said that a warrant was issued for the arrest of the boxer on charges of arms trafficking and organised crime apart from revealing that the case is currently in the works under the prosecutors.
The lawyer and family of Julio Cesar Chaver Jr, the son of former three division world champion Julio Cesar Chavez, have categorically denied the accusations on him in regards to his connections with the Sinaloa cartel. Moreover, with this latest development, the boxing career of the 39-year-old, who held the WBC Middleweight Championship more than a decade ago, has come to a standstill.
