India is gearing up for the Commonwealth Games 2026, starting on July 23 in Glasgow, Scotland. With a 125-member team, they’re set to make their mark, even though the competition schedule has been trimmed down. The squad includes 77 men and 48 women who will compete in 13 disciplines, including five para sports, until August 2.

This year’s Games are quite different since Glasgow has taken over from Victoria as the host city, leading to some cost-cutting measures that have unfortunately dropped medal-heavy sports like badminton, shooting, and wrestling. This means that every chance to snag a medal will be crucial for India, as they’ll be focusing on a smaller range of events.

The Glasgow Games are shaping up to be a tougher challenge compared to Birmingham 2022. Four years ago, India brought home 61 medals, but more than half of those came from sports that won’t be featured this time around. This shift puts extra pressure on athletes competing in athletics, boxing, weightlifting, and a few other disciplines to uphold India’s impressive Commonwealth legacy.

India's hopes for medals are set to shine in athletics, weightlifting, and boxing, kicking off with lawn bowls, where the country made history by snagging one gold and one silver in Birmingham. Leading the charge for the athletics team is Olympic and world champion Neeraj Chopra, who’s a top contender in the men's javelin throw final on August 1. However, he’ll face tough competition from Pakistan's Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem.

India is also counting on Murali Sreeshankar in the long jump, Praveen Chithravel in the triple jump, and Gulveer Singh in distance running to bring home more medals. In weightlifting, Mirabai Chanu is the star of the show in the women's 49kg category, with Bindyarani Devi and Gyaneshwari Yadav also in the mix as strong contenders. The boxing ring will see Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain, world champion Jaismine Lamboria, along with Sakshi Chaudhary and Preeti Pawar, all vying for glory.
