The Commonwealth Games has just received a significant boost of confidence as it gears up for its 2026 edition. Commonwealth Sport President Dr. Donald Rukare has thrown his support behind the streamlined model that will be implemented in Glasgow. The event's future had been in jeopardy after Victoria, Australia, withdrew as host in July 2023 due to escalating costs.
In a conversation with AFP, Rukare emphasized that the Commonwealth Games remains a stage "where champions are made," even with the new, reduced format. He highlighted that Glasgow's willingness to step in has not only ensured the Games' continuation but has also paved the way for a more sustainable and practical approach moving forward.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games opens on Thursday with a reduced programme of 10 sports and six para-sports, compared to 19 sports and eight para-sports at Birmingham 2022. King Charles is expected to attend the opening ceremony and officially declare the Games open.
Rukare praised Glasgow for rescuing the event, saying, "We had that dark cloud over us in terms of having no Games, but Glasgow stepped in. Scotland the brave as we say. For some of the athletes, they're going to be representing their countries, their territories, for the first time and we believe that the Commonwealth Games is where champions are made."
How Glasgow Saved Commonwealth Games 2026?
The journey to Glasgow hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games hit a significant bump in the road. Initially, Victoria had ambitious plans to showcase 21 sports, matching the record set at the 2010 Delhi Games. However, on July 18, 2023, the state government pulled the plug after costs skyrocketed to an estimated AUD 6-7 billion. Premier Daniel Andrews stated that such spending simply couldn't be justified, and the government also announced it would terminate its hosting agreement with the Commonwealth Games Federation and work on a settlement.
With that, the hunt for a new host kicked into high gear. By April 11, 2024, Glasgow emerged as the last viable option if no other bidders stepped up. The proposal aimed to cut costs by utilizing venues from the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Instead of building a new athletes' village, competitors would be accommodated in hotels and student housing at Glasgow Caledonian University and the University of Glasgow. By August 11, 2024, reports confirmed that Glasgow had secured the agreement to host the Games.
As a result, the 2026 edition will feature just 10 sports across seven venues and will forgo an athletes' village. This will mark the smallest Commonwealth Games program since Victoria, Canada hosted the 1994 edition, which also had 10 sports. Notably, team sports were absent from that event and only made their debut at the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games.
While the format has been scaled back, Rukare believes this approach paves the way for sustainability, with future editions likely expanding to around 15 to 18 sports. He also pointed out that Ahmedabad's confirmed hosting of the 2030 centenary Games is a promising sign for the competition's long-term future.
