Ricky Hatton, the former boxing world champion from Great Britain, has died at the age of 46 in Manchester in a shocking turn of events with his body found at his home on Sunday, September 14. Widely heralded as the “The Hitman”, Ricky Hatton managed to win world titles at light-welterweight and welterweight divisions, to become one of the greatest boxers in the sport.

During his illustrious boxing career, which lasted for 15 years, Ricky Hatton went on to win 45 of his 48 professional bouts before taking a retirement from the sport in 2012. After winning the world titles with wins over Kostya Tszyu and Jose Luis Castillo, he ended up losing to Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, who are two of the greatest professional boxers in the history of the sport.

As per the report published in BBC Sport, the Greater Manchester Police spokesperson gave the details surrounding the sudden passing of Ricky Hatton, which sent shockwaves not only in the world of boxing, but also the sports community in general. It read, “Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45am today where they found the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances.”

Moreover, it was in July of this year when Ricky Hatton announced his return to the boxing ring against Eisa Al Dah, and the match was scheduled to take place on December 2 in Dubai in the middleweight division. At the time, the organisers of the fight had stated that it would end up being a professional match, but the doubts remain whether it would be fully sanctioned by the relevant authorities.

In 2022, Ricky Hatton battled against Marco Antonio Barrera in an exhibition match; and in the build-up, he had spoken about battling against depression.
