Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met the medallist of the recently-concluded Commonwealth Games 2026 in New Delhi on Sunday, and congratulated them for their performance in Glasgow. Modi also interacted with the medal winners and lauded them for their hard work, determination and commitment. Notably, India finished fourth on the medal tally with 39 medals, including 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze.
As the medallists met PM Modi, he shared a short video of his interaction with the athletes across social media platforms, and called the meeting a special occasion. Not only this, but he also encouraged them to continue with their hard work and represent the country on the global stage. During the interaction, PM Modi said, "Jo khelega, woh khiega. Always cheer for Bharat.” Moreover, Sakshi Choudhary, one of India’s gold medallists from the tournament, spoke about the significance of the meeting with the prime minister.
She also said,“Our honourable PM sir has welcomed all the medallists from the Commonwealth Games and we are feeling very proud of this. We have really enjoyed meeting him, he is very humble.”
India’s Campaign at Commonwealth Games 2026
At the quadrennial tournament, India emerged as one of the leading countries after finishing fourth in the tally. India won 39 medals, which included 13 gold, 17 silver, and 9 bronze. While the Indian contingent delivered consistent performance throughout the tournament, the ninth day was marked by some peak performances, which included 16 medals to the tally. Talking about the first gold of India, Mirabai Chanu had a top-podium finish, marking a third consecutive time in the competition.
Chanu set a Games record with 190 kg total. Apart from her, Indian boxers had a memorable campaign with the highest number of gold medals across all categories. Notably, they won a total of 10 medals, which include seven gold and three silver. It marked the most successful boxing performance by any nation in a single edition of the Commonwealth Games
