Victor Wembanyama spoke about Trae Young after Game 3 of the 2026 NBA Finals when he was labelled as ‘New York’s biggest villain’. After a massive 32-point, 8-rebound performance against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, reporters asked if he was embracing his new title as New York's newest villain. Smiling, Wembanyama denied the comparison, stating: "I guess, but I am nowhere near Trae Young's level, though."

The reference was to Trae Young's historic 2021 playoff series playing for Atlantic Hawks, where he famously dominated the Knicks at MSG, embraced the crowd's hatred, and dramatically bowed on the court after eliminating them, showcasing his aura. He posted 29.2 points and 9.8 assists as the Hawks beat the Knicks in five games. The MSG crowd is not easy to make quiet, but Wemby exactly did that when he scored nine first-quarter points with 32 points, eight rebounds, and six assists on 11-of-18 shooting, cutting New York's series lead to 2-1. He joined Magic Johnson as the only players in NBA history to post those numbers in a Finals game before turning 23.

I just need a little time off: Wembanaya on his exhausting long season

Victor Wembanyama is leading the San Antonio Spurs in the 2026 NBA Finals. During the 2025-26 regular season, he averaged 25.0 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game. He also secured major accolades this year, including Defensive Player of the Year and All-NBA honours.

When asked about his workload, Wembly replied that he needs some time to relax, as final pressure can truly play tricks with his mind.

“I really tried to relax,” Wembanyama said. “The playoffs it’s like a whirlwind. It’s hard to put your head out of the water, and sometimes it’s like I don’t even have to watch the game back, by the way. I just need a little time off, let my brain cool down and recover.”

The New York Knicks would be looking for a comeback to prevent San Antonio from levelling the series on Wednesday.
